Making Faces ~ My look from Real Beauty Talk. Smoky Glam vibes. The session was on color placement and coordination.
Taking this opportunity to SHOULD you, the more I observe the more I realized that there isn’t enough education to guide women on the correct ways to wear their makeup. Growing up my male family members used to refer to makeup as “war paint”. As I developed a more intimate relationship with makeup I noted how brands have transformed their makeup line from their complexion products to colors, all meant to complement our unique skin tones. Especially on darker skin beauties. But with the age of social media, I feel as though the untrained collaborators have taken us back in time and makeup is once again looking like my male family members described it in the 80s and 90s like “war paint”.
Here are 5 things about makeup artistry you need to know and you SHOULD NOT settle for. Period!!!
1) Makeup SHOULD enhance your natural beauty not change your features to an unrecognizable you, even if it’s full glam. Unless you are intentionally going for DRAG. Less is more! I guarantee that you don’t need all that. Apply less and enjoy better results.
2) Foundation SHOULD create the illusion of a flawless even complexion/skin tone. You SHOULD look like you were born with it. The purpose of the foundation is to disguise minor blemishes and even out your skin tone. It SHOULD not look like a mask. If someone can look at you and have the urge to blend or scrap some of that ish off, queen your MUA is facking you up; it’s too much. For the ladies who have skin issues, it is possible to apply your foundation in layers and still achieve the look of flawless skin. I promise you.
3) Your Highlighter SHOULD look like it’s coming from within not streaked on top of your skin. Tell your makeup teacher to take a proper pro class. Stop settling for mediocre makeup. How are you possibly embracing that when you look unrecognizable and overdone? Check out beauty magazines observe your favorite female celebrities note how they rock beauty. What you are being taught is makeup that is perfect for your role in a stage play.
4) Eyeshadow SHOULD enhance and compliment your eyes, their shape, and set the overall look and mood you want to project, even if it’s glamorous. Too much eyeshadow ages you and it’s super distracting. Cut down the amount of product you are applying by 3/4 and enjoy better results. Please!
5) Eyelashes SHOULD enhance the look; take it from being OKAY to WOW! And by the way, there is a huge difference between WOW! And WHOA! Eyelash extensions are like the icing on the cake for makeup. Lashes can be glamorous, yet not overpower your eyes. Please observe and learn the differences between drag lashes or stage lashes and the ones used for beauty makeup. When eyelashes are too long or full they make your eyes look heavy.
Let me break it down further. Here’s the perfect example. The lashes I’m wearing in the above photo are very dramatic even though they look good it’s not the perfect strip for me. However, on someone who has full-rounded almond shape eyes, it is perfect. I got away with it because the look I was going for is smoky and sultry.
