Makeup With Purpose

Recently I co-hosted a beauty event, I was totally flabbergasted by the overall approach to makeup. The women were taught how to apply way too many eyeshadow colors all at once, like 5, paint on their eyebrows by following their natural shape, apply liquid liner, when some obviously never even learnt how to line their eyes with a regular liner, then they were told to choose any lipstick and blush to complete the look. My stomach flip-flopped at this point, I don’t know how I survived that ordeal, I guess I really have to give thanks for my gracious nature.

The same makeup works differently against all black, since black is considered to be a neutral color almost anything works well

When I was introduced to makeup I was taught, a couple of things that stayed stuck with me over the years, a woman’s makeup should never walk before her, colors used on the eyes, lips and cheeks should complement each other, the overall makeup look should complement what is being worn, and should not compete with each other. Eye makeup does not have to be seen to be effective. A colorful dress does not require the same amount of color on the eyes.  Makeup can be used to create the illusion of perfection, brow products were created to assist in adding definition and fullness to brows where needed. It is not meant to be painted on. And armed with a pencil I can reshape or define any feature on the face.

My lip is pink and my sweater is a bright blue this works because they are both cool shades that are complementary. Believe me it would not have the same effect if my sweater was for eg brown or orange

After the experience it dawned on me how desperately women needed to know there are better options. I always noticed how so-call professionals lack the awareness that colors used on the face need to be coordinated and should complement each other, cool and warm tones only look great together if it’s the opposing complementary color.  When colors are coordinated and placed strategically to enhance the area where its being used it looks more cohesive and less intrusive.

Honestly I don’t think of makeup as complicated, I just have a different eye for the overall finish than most because of the knowledge I was given. My objective here is not to criticize anyone, rather shed light for the persons seeking true guidance.

Lets take a quick check, ask yourself these questions when deciding on wearing makeup, hopefully by going through this check list, you will redirect your approach to wearing makeup. Pay attention and you would be amazed by the results. When applying makeup what is my objective? What do I hope to accomplish at the end of the application? How familiar are you with your, facial features? What is my facial shape is it round, square or oval? What is the purpose behind contouring, do I really need it, if yes where? What colors complement my skin tone best, what colors compliment the color of my eyes? Did you know that lip colors can brighten your smile, as in make you teeth look whiter? Did you know that choosing the right texture is just as important and chosing the right color? Did you know that you can wear makeup to reflect your mood. One of the questions I ask my client during our consultation session is, how would you like to look, are you feeling sexy, effortless, chic, romantic, glamorous, dramatic, super natural, these questions give me direction and also assist me to help my client create her desired mood.

I have done a lot of experimenting with color, both cool and warm shades complement my skin tone equally.
